Leo S. Shamblin Scholarship Fund
The Leo S. Shamblin Scholarship Fund was established
to provide scholarship support to potential Alumni
College participants with a strong record of volunteer
service in the community and on campus. Recipients must
intend to participate in the entire Alumni College weekend,
and young alumni and out-of-town participants are especially
encouraged to apply. Individuals interested in applying
for the scholarship funds should address a letter to

working at a high-level in the federal government as
White House
Fellows. The program was established in 1964 by
President Johnson and it is the nation's most prestigious
fellowship for leadership development and public service.
Most White House Fellows are already established in
their chosen profession and are in their early 30s,
though ages range from 25-40.

there are about 1,000 applications, of which 100 are
offered interviews. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Gates
Cambridge Scholarships
In October 2000, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation established the Gates Cambridge Trust, creating an international scholarship program to enable outstanding graduate students from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge.
Gates
Cambridge Scholarships are awarded only to students
who gain admission to the University through the regular
procedures. The scholarship covers the full cost of
study at Cambridge for a single person — namely,
all tuition fees, an allowance, and one return airfare
between the UK and the scholar's normal country of residence.
Candidates may come from any country of the world except
the United Kingdom and should normally be under the
age of 30. The application deadline for entrance in
the fall is typically October of the previous year.

Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund
The late Mrs. Dolores Zohrab Liebmann, daughter

fellowships
tenable for graduate study in the United States by American
citizens, without restriction as to field. Study in
professional schools (law, business, etc.) is also supported.
Fellowships can be extended for two additional years
beyond the first. In 2007-2008, the fellowships included
an $18,000 stipend, plus tuition.
Successful applicants must demonstrate financial need by submitting tax
returns and university financial aid information, if applicable. Applicants must further affirm that they "do not support, advocate, or
uphold the principles and doctrines of Communism."
Application forms can be obtained from Rice in October
and are due at the end of January. Decisions are made
in May.

scholarship for one year of graduate study by American
citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 at institutions
of higher learning on the island of Ireland. Usually,
this will be a one-year master's degree program, but
other options may be considered if the applicant has
the undergraduate background required for the proposed
field of study. The scholarship does not support research
or independent study outside a regular program.
Only applicants who are currently full-time students
at a university require an institutional endorsement.
Others may submit such an endorsement if they wish,
but it is not mandatory.
Rice's internal application deadline is September 3,
2008. The general deadline is October 6, 2008. The 20

Wagoner Foreign Study Scholarship
James T. Wagoner '29 loved to travel, and he loved Rice,
so he made provisions that after his death a study-abroad
scholarship for students would be established in memory
of his late wife and parents.
For alumni, the competition for the scholarship is open
to 2007 graduates and current Rice graduate students.
Foreign citizenship is no bar to eligibility. The scholarship
may be held for a year, a semester, or a summer. Scholarship
awards will be related to the scholar's projected expenses.
Wagoner Foreign Study Scholars are normally expected
to be enrolled in a foreign university. However in exceptional
circumstances where the committee agrees that it would
substantially benefit the applicant, a scholarship may
be used to fund foreign travel without university enrollment.
Application packets and supporting materials are due
February 11, 2009.
