Scholarships and Fellowships for Alumni

You may have graduated, but you may still be eligible as alumni for select scholarships and fellowships through Rice. The alumni office and the Office of the Dean of Undergraduates have compiled a list of opportunities, and will include additional programs throughout the year. Check in periodically for information on stipends and grants for travel and study.

You can find more information by visiting http://fellowships.rice.edu. Please note the Rice may have internal deadlines that are earlier than the official deadlines advertised by many scholarships.

General Scholarships and Fellowships

Leo S. Shamblin Scholarship Fund

The Leo S. Shamblin Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarship support to potential Alumni College participants with a strong record of volunteer service in the community and on campus. Recipients must intend to participate in the entire Alumni College weekend, and young alumni and out-of-town participants are especially encouraged to apply. Individuals interested in applying for the scholarship funds should address a letter to the director of alumni affairs explaining why the funds would assist them in attending Alumni College and how they satisfy the criteria regarding volunteer service. The deadline for application is early February each year.

White House Fellowships

Every year up to 19 Americans in the early stages of their careers are selected to spend one year working at a high-level in the federal government as White House Fellows. The program was established in 1964 by President Johnson and it is the nation's most prestigious fellowship for leadership development and public service. Most White House Fellows are already established in their chosen profession and are in their early 30s, though ages range from 25-40.

Applications are due annually on February 1. Each year there are about 1,000 applications, of which 100 are offered interviews. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Graduate Study

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship

The Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship is the most generous award for students with financial need who will enter graduate school for the first time in the fall of their chosen year. Scholars receive up to $50,000 per year for up to six years. Rice may nominate two students.

Rice alumni who have graduated since in the past five years are eligible to apply. Applicants must provide evidence of admission to graduate school. The deadline for consideration by the Rice nominating committee is typically in February but should be confirmed with the office fo fellowships.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships

In October 2000, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation established the Gates Cambridge Trust, creating an international scholarship program to enable outstanding graduate students from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded only to students who gain admission to the University through the regular procedures. The scholarship covers the full cost of study at Cambridge for a single person — namely, all tuition fees, an allowance, and one return airfare between the UK and the scholar's normal country of residence.

Candidates may come from any country of the world except the United Kingdom and should normally be under the age of 30. The application deadline for entrance in the fall is typically October of the previous year.

Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund

The late Mrs. Dolores Zohrab Liebmann, daughter of a prominent Armenian statesman, created in her will fellowships tenable for graduate study in the United States by American citizens, without restriction as to field. Study in professional schools (law, business, etc.) is also supported. Fellowships can be extended for two additional years beyond the first. In 2007-2008, the fellowships included an $18,000 stipend, plus tuition.

Successful applicants must demonstrate financial need by submitting tax returns and university financial aid information, if applicable. Applicants must further affirm that they "do not support, advocate, or uphold the principles and doctrines of Communism."

Application forms can be obtained from Rice in October and are due at the end of January. Decisions are made in May.

Marshall Scholarships

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. At least forty Scholars are selected each year to study either at graduate or occasionally undergraduate level at an UK institution in any field of study. Each scholarship is held for two years.

The scholarships are open only to United States citizens who hold a first degree with a minimum GPA of 3.7. To qualify, candidates must have graduated after within the past three years. Applications must be submitted to Rice for consideration by September 3, 2008.

George J. Mitchell Scholarships

The US-Ireland Alliance sponsors a competitive, national scholarship for one year of graduate study by American citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 at institutions of higher learning on the island of Ireland. Usually, this will be a one-year master's degree program, but other options may be considered if the applicant has the undergraduate background required for the proposed field of study. The scholarship does not support research or independent study outside a regular program.

Only applicants who are currently full-time students at a university require an institutional endorsement. Others may submit such an endorsement if they wish, but it is not mandatory.

Rice's internal application deadline is September 3, 2008. The general deadline is October 6, 2008. The 20 finalists will be invited to Washington, DC, for the selection committee interviews in November and must be present.

Rhodes Scholarships

The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. The first American scholars were elected in 1904.

Rhodes scholars are elected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. All educational costs, such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory and certain other fees, are paid on the scholar's behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. Each scholar receives in addition a maintenance allowance adequate to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations. The Rhodes Trustees cover the necessary costs of travel to and from Oxford, and upon application, may approve additional grants for research purposes or study-related travel.

An applicant, by October 6, 2008, must be at least 18 but not yet 24 years of age. Applications must be submitted to Rice for consideration by September 3, 2008.

Mandarin Enrichment Scholarship

The Mandarin Enrichment Scholarship offers a stipend of about $770 per month for twelve months to study Mandarin Chinese at a language center in Taiwan. Visit http://www.studyintaiwan.org to find a language center. Applications are accepted until June 30, but early
applications are encouraged. Eight scholarships are available through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston, which covers a variety of southern states.

The competition is open to both beginning and advanced students of Chinese, and to both current undergraduates and to alumni. Students with Taiwanese nationality are not eligible, but students of Chinese origin are.

Wagoner Foreign Study Scholarship

James T. Wagoner '29 loved to travel, and he loved Rice, so he made provisions that after his death a study-abroad scholarship for students would be established in memory of his late wife and parents.

For alumni, the competition for the scholarship is open to 2007 graduates and current Rice graduate students. Foreign citizenship is no bar to eligibility. The scholarship may be held for a year, a semester, or a summer. Scholarship awards will be related to the scholar's projected expenses.

Wagoner Foreign Study Scholars are normally expected to be enrolled in a foreign university. However in exceptional circumstances where the committee agrees that it would substantially benefit the applicant, a scholarship may be used to fund foreign travel without university enrollment.

Application packets and supporting materials are due February 11, 2009.
