Programs
Scholarships
for Undergradutes
Each year the REA provides scholarships
to outstanding junior and senior engineering students
who are then recognized at the annual student awards
picnic and barbecue held each spring.
The following scholarships are administered and funded by the REA:
- REA
Junior and Senior Merit Awards -- to one junior
and one senior in each of the seven departments of
the Brown School offering undergraduate degrees
- REA
Herbert Allen Outstanding Junior Award -- to
the overall outstanding junior
- REA
Outstanding Senior Award -- to the overall outstanding
senior
The
following scholarships from other funding sources are
selected by the respective engineering departments and
presented by the REA:
- The
Harianna Butler Award
-- to a deserving married undergraduate
- The
Alan Chapman Achievement Award -- to a mechanical
engineering undergraduate
- The
Hershel M. Rich Outstanding Invention Award --
to honor an outstanding invention by faculty, graduate
students, and/or undergraduate students
- The
Sartwelle/Buckley Award -- to an outstanding
junior mechanical engineering student
Summer
Employment
The REA helps Rice Career Services
by identifying and recruiting company participants for
engineering internship programs. Many companies who
employ summer interns later make permanent job offers
to these same students. For more information, contact
Career Services.
Science
and Engineering Fair
Each year REA board members
visit the Houston Science and Engineering Fair (for
secondary school students) and select one of the participants
to be awarded a Rice scholarship. This scholarship is
contingent on the awardee being accepted at and attending
Rice.
Career
Fair
The REA hosts a table at the
Rice Career Fair in the fall. Students are informed
about REA programs and future membership.
Faculty/Alumni
Seminars
Stronger relationships between
Brown School faculty and alumni are built by seminars
in which faculty present their some of their recent
research results.
Outstanding
Engineering Alumni Awards
The REA annually recognizes
outstanding engineering alumni in two categories. The
Outstanding Engineering Alumnus award has been presented
every year since 1974. It recognizes alumni for careers
of outstanding professional achievement and community
service. The Outstanding Young Engineering Alumnus award
was presented for the first time in 1996. It recognizes
the achievements of engineers under the age of 40.
The OEA and OYEA award winners for 2007 will be announced
shortly. Nominations are now being accepted for the
2008 Outstanding Engineering Alumnus/a and Outstanding
Young Engineering Alumnus/a award. Please contact John
Waits '72 for more information.
