SOLAR Leadership Award

"Rice has frequently been named one of the top colleges for Hispanics. Do you agree or disagree with this designation? How might you improve conditions for Hispanics at Rice? Is there anything you do now to make Rice better for Hispanics?"
For the 2005 SOLAR Leadership Award, we asked our applicants to write an essay on this topic, but these are questions that we often ask ourselves as alumni. One of SOLAR's most important goals is to give back to the Rice community. To that end, SOLAR established the Leadership Award in 2001 to provide scholarships to Rice juniors and seniors who have demonstrated leadership and service to the Hispanic community.
Competition for the award includes an application and essay. In 2005 we received a number of impressive applications, but could choose only two winners. We presented Karen Romero (Wiess) and Jennifer Robles (Hanszen) each with a $500 scholarship check at HACER's Posada on December 5, 2005.
This December, SOLAR will again be awarding two scholarships in the amount of $500 each as part of the 2006 Leadership Award. Check this site in September for more details and a link to the application.
We encourage interested alumni to send in donations for this scholarship so that we can continue to provide, and expand, this award!
SOLAR is a separate, nonprofit organization. While its membership is comprised of alumni of Rice University, donations to SOLAR are neither counted as a donation to nor managed by the university.
