International Programs
Photo Contest
Alumni Travel/Study Program Division
The Association of Rice Alumni and Rice International Programs are pleased to extend to Rice travelers the opportunity to participate in the annual International Programs Photo Contest, which had its origin as a photo competition for Rice students traveling abroad. Each year, our travel program participants take countless photos to document their journeys or express themselves artistically. We invite you to share your favorite photos with the entire Rice community and support Rice undergraduate study and work abroad opportunities in the process. Winners' photos are purchased and may be reproduced, which will generate funds for student scholarships.
Alumni photos are judged in a category separate from student work, and photos from any 2007 Rice alumni trip are eligible. The deadline for submitting photos is January 31, 2008. Prizes are awarded at a reception held jointly in the spring with international programs. The winning entrant will receive two
certificates totaling $500 to apply toward future travel
with the Rice Alumni/Travel Study Program.

ENTRIES
Travelers may submit up to five entries. They may
be prints, digital photos, or a combination of both.
Prints:
- Photos must be clearly labeled on the back with your name and the photo title. (But please do not write directly on the back of your photos; marks often show through on the front.)
- Each print should be 4” x 6” or larger and be submitted in a separate envelope. Each envelope should be marked with your name and the photo title. The envelope must contain the print, the corresponding negative, and a copy of the official entry form.
- Because APS/Advantix photos can only be enlarged minimally without distortion, 35mm is the preferred minimum standard.
Digital photos:
- Photos should be at least 200, but preferably 300 dpi.
- Entries should be submitted on a CD or zip disk labeled with your name and contact information. A hard copy of the official entry form must be submitted with each entry.
- Winners in this category will be displayed on the Rice Alumni and/or International Programs website, but may not be featured in the contest exhibit in a print format.
SUBJECT
Judges will look for pictures that are representative
of your travel experience: local people, Rice travelers
in cross-cultural situations, landscapes, etc. Judges
aren't necessarily looking for the exotic. Rather,
entries will be judged on:
- The extent to which the photo conveys a sense of place or culture, and provides insight into your experience as a traveler.
- Artistic and technical merit.
Although reproducibility isn't used as a judging criterion, the nature of the contest requires that all submissions, whether digital or print, be capable of being enlarged for reproduction. Submissions that don't meet this criterion cannot be considered.
WINNERS
One Best of Show will be awarded. The number
of other winning places will be left to the discretion
of the judging panel. All winning photos may be featured
in Rice Alumni and Rice International Programs publications
and promotional materials, including print and electronic
media. A given participant may not win Best of Show
in consecutive years, but individuals are encouraged
to enter in each year in which they are otherwise eligible
in order to support Rice International Programs.
BEST OF SHOW
For the 2008 photo contest, the Best of Show winning
entrant will receive two certificates for $250 off the
price of any Rice Alumni Travel-Study trip ($500 total).
An individual may not apply both certificates toward
the cost of any one trip for him- or herself. The certificates
may be used for the winning entrant and a companion
on a single trip, or by the winning entrant on two trips.
RESPONSIBILITY/LIABILITY
The Rice Alumni Office and Office of International
Programs will be responsible for producing enlargements
from the winning negatives and displaying them. The
finished enlargements will become the property of the
Rice Alumni Office and Rice International Programs.
All prints and negatives that have been submitted will
be returned. Every effort will be made to protect your
photos/negatives, but in the event of loss or damage,
our liability is limited to the cost of a replacement
roll of film.
RIGHTS GRANT
Entrants are required to grant to Rice University the
royalty-free right to reproduce and use negatives and
prints of submitted entries in university-related publications
and promotions.
