About Alumni Association

Volunteer Opportunities on the ARA Board and Committees

Alumni College Committee

Alumni College is an annual weekend on campus during which alumni and friends take noncredit classes tailored specifically to lay interests. Outside of classes, participants enjoy special tours, campus athletics and cultural events, and other activities. Alumni College committee members help plan the classes and activities of Alumni College Weekend and help ensure that the event runs smoothly. Past participation in Alumni College is strongly recommended. For more information contact Lauren Linn, 713-348-6093.

ARA Board

The Association of Rice Alumni is governed by a 28-member alumni board which oversees its operations and programs. Members of the ARA board represent the alumni body to the university and represent the ARA to its constituents - Rice alumni. All Rice alumni are eligible to serve on the alumni board. Board members serve a three-year term, and must be committed to expending the time and energy necessary to make the ARA a success. Duties include such things as attending thrice-yearly board meetings, serving on ARA committees, and overall support for ARA programs and activities. Applications are made in writing to the nominations committee. For more information contact Rose Sundin, 713-348-4678.

Homecoming & Reunion

Be a Homecoming event or class reunion chair. Each fall there are fifty opportunities to be the point person for one of the many events and parties at Homecoming. The focus for alumni volunteers is public relations: your connections help get the word to fellow alumni that Rice Homecoming & Reunion is the "place to be." The logistics are handled largely by alumni staff, which helps to keep your time commitment manageable. For information contact Jennifer Harding, 713-348-6094.

Regional Alumni Groups

Help alumni and friends outside of Houston to stay connected to Rice through regional alumni activities! The alumni office facilitates alumni gatherings in major cities throughout the U.S. (and occasionally beyond), and is always in need of regional volunteers and event ideas. Events typically include student send-off parties, faculty lectures, happy hours, networking mixers, gatherings related to Rice athletics events, picnics, museum outings or other cultural activities - anything that is likely to appeal to and facilitate interaction among our far-flung alumni and Rice parents. Volunteer opportunities include coordinating a single event (with alumni staff assistance), hosting an event in your home, offering access to a private club or corporate venue, serving as a city contact for Rice alums who may be new to your area, or (in cities with very large Rice populations) heading up a special-interest group (for example, happy hour, book club, or investment club). Visit the Regional Alumni Groups Web site for more information and a list of contacts in various cities.

Rice Alumni Event Greeters

Be on the front line and greet alumni and their guests as they arrive at Association of Rice Alumni events. On campus opportunities include Rice Homecoming & Reunion, the Alumni Crawfish Boil (held before a home baseball game each spring), the Alumni Cookout before the Rice vs. Houston football game, and the Presidential Address and Reception (typically held in January or February). In addition, there is Rice Families Weekend for current Rice students and their families. Parents of current students will appreciate your warm welcome to Rice, and fellow alumni will truly appreciate a friendly smile and greeting (not to mention how much the alumni office staff will appreciate your assistance!). Duties include general meet-and-greet, assisting guests with name tags, making change, fielding questions, and generally facilitating guest arrival at events. Contact Jennifer Harding for more information or to get involved.

Young Alumni Committee

A Houston-area group that works to introduce recent graduates (last 10 years) to the alumni association and encourage close ties to the university. The committee plans events throughout the year, including Homecoming activities, football tents, and Beer Bike activities. For more information contact co-chairs Kate Gunn '05 and Timmie Wang '05, or Nicole Peralta in the alumni office at 713-348-4534.
