Volunteer Opportunities with Homecoming and Reunions

Homecoming & Reunion

Be a Homecoming event or class reunion chair. Each fall there are fifty opportunities to be the point person for one of the many events and parties at Homecoming. The focus for alumni volunteers is public relations: your connections help get the word to fellow alumni that Rice Homecoming & Reunion is the "place to be." The logistics are handled largely by alumni staff, which helps to keep your time commitment manageable. For information contact Jennifer Harding, 713-348-6094.

Reunion Giving Program

Volunteers in this program raise money for the Rice Annual Fund from their classmates in honor of their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th, 35th, or 40th reunions. For more information contact Amanda Shagrin, 713-348-6241. Volunteer opportunities include:

Reunion Giving Co-Chairs
This position provides leadership and direction for your class reunion giving effort. Responsibilities include recruiting a committee, soliciting classmates to increase their gifts for this effort, setting goals and strategies, writing a personalized letter to your class, and attending the reunion gift check presentation at Homecoming. Co-chairs are expected to make a gift before soliciting others. The commitment is for two years, with an average of eight hours a month.

Reunion Leadership Gift Co-Chair ('80s and '90s Reunion Classes)
In this position, you will assist the reunion co-chairs in identifying and soliciting classmates to lead the effort with $1,000 or more ($500 for classes 10 or fewer years out). You will recruit a committee, set goals and strategies, attend training sessions, and attend the reunion gift presentation at Homecoming. The leadership gift co-chair is expected to make a gift before soliciting others. The commitment is for two years, with an average of eight hours a month.

Reunion Giving Committee
This is a great way to be involved with your reunion. As a member of your class reunion committee, you are expected to attend training sessions and telefunds, update classmate records, contact up to 20 classmates to make Annual Fund gifts in honor of their reunion, send them thank you notes, and attend the reunion gift presentation at Homecoming. Committee members are expected to make a gift before soliciting others. The commitment is for one year, with an average of four hours a month.

Golden Anniversary Scholarship Program

This program is a five-year effort by a class between its 45th and 50th reunions to raise funds to endow a scholarship named in honor of the 50th reunion of the class. For more information contact Helen Toombs '79, 713-348-4626. Volunteer positions include:

Golden Anniversary Class Chair
This position provides leadership and direction for the project. Responsibilities include recruiting a committee, leading committee meetings, writing semiannual solicitation letters to the class, and working with program staff in soliciting leadership gifts. The chair is expected to pledge a gift before soliciting others. The commitment is for five years, averaging eight hours a month during each November and April of the project.

Golden Anniversary Committee
Each committee member is responsible for soliciting 12 classmates during the project and for attending committee meetings. Volunteers need to feel comfortable asking classmates to contribute to this scholarship. Committee members are expected to pledge or make a gift before soliciting others. The commitment is for five years, averaging eight hours a month during each November and April of the project.
