Career Services Internships &
Recruiting
How many Rice alumni and students
work at your organization? Would you like more? If you know
of employment opportunities or internships in your company
or career field, the Rice Career Services center wants to
hear from you! Perhaps you're in a position to hire, or can
help Rice set up a closer working relationship with your company.
Email the Rice Career Services Center to help pave the way for the next generation of Rice alumni.

Chemistry
Department Graduate Students
After graduate school … then
what? If you're a chemistry alum or otherwise have expertise
in a field where there are opportunities for chemistry majors,
Rice's graduate students in chemistry would love to hear from
you! Students are most interested in advice on how to get
jobs and contacts for getting jobs. Any types of interactions
that would facilitate networking among graduate students and
alumni would be great. You could talk to graduate
students about your career experiences, how you made
your choices, or what to watch out for on the corporate
ladder. Or perhaps you'd be willing to help organize
a reception at the American Chemical Society meetings where
Rice alumni, students, and faculty can meet and socialize.
Please contact the Department
of Chemistry for more information.

College Community Associates
Rice alumni are invited to apply
to become community associates of one the residential colleges.
Community associates serve as mentors and friends to the students. To facilitate this mentorship, the associates
attend major events in the college; host new student groups
during Orientation Week and periodically throughout the
year; and occasionally dine in the college with the students. There are a limited
number of such positions, and typically an alum must be two years past graduation to be
eligible. If you are interested, please contact the
college masters via the appropriate coordinator, listed
below.

George
R. Brown School of Engineering Graduate Students
Rice alumni and other friends of
the university are an invaluable resource in helping students
make the transition from Rice to the world of work. Everyone
wins when you share your career expertise with Rice engineering
graduate students. The students gain knowledge of the workplace
from someone who has "been there, done that," your
company may get another bright Rice alumnus or alumna on board,
and you'll feel great knowing that you've helped make a difference
in the life of a Rice graduate student. Students are particularly
interested in:
 |
Networking
|
 |
Summer internships
|
 |
Industrial internships (not
necessarily summer)
|
 |
Employment after Rice
|
 |
Coaching on presentation skills
|
If you can help out,
please contact Bart
Sinclair, associate dean of the George R. Brown School
of Engineering.

Graduate Student Loan Closet
A project of the Faculty Women's
Club of Rice, the Graduate Student Loan Closet works to build
and maintain a stock of household goods to help graduate students
(as well as post-docs and visiting professors) get settled
in their new apartments while attending Rice. The Loan Closet
functions entirely on volunteer effort and donations. Assistance
is needed with processing Loan Closet items (intake and lending),
and to help with an occasional garage sale (to benefit the
Loan Closet). If you're the do-it-yourself type, you can
help paint and repair furniture and other items. And if you
have a truck, van, or SUV and would occasionally be available
to help haul donated items, this would greatly help out. Extend
a helping hand and friendship to Rice graduate students! Contact
Mary Lou Margrave at 713-667-9887 for the Loan Closet schedule
and workshop times.

Leadership
Rice
Be a mentor as part of Leadership
Rice's Summer Mentorship Experience or help
identify great mentorship opportunities. Leadership Rice serves
students from all years and all majors, and seeks a wide array
of placements both nationally and internationally. Each student
chosen to participate in Leadership Rice is placed in a full-time,
paying, eight-week mentorship. What distinguishes Leadership
Rice mentorships from other internships is the preparation
Leadership Rice provides, the ongoing contact they maintain with students, and the presence
of a mentor who commits to help the student stretch and grow
during the summer.
In addition, Leadership Rice students need mentors from time to time in
specific content areas. Those working on Envision
Grants need community mentors to help them develop strategic
plans. Students in our leadership
course who write Strategic Vision Papers also need contact
with community resources.
The Leadership Rice website provides more detail, including specific
information about the mentorship experience.

Rice Ambassadors
The Rice Ambassadors are a volunteer group (traditionally students) that assists with special university functions and represents the university at events both on campus and elsewhere. Houston-area alumni volunteers are needed to supplement the student corps. Duties involve giving tours to
middle schools — particularly those serving underrepresented
minorities — and to other special groups that visit Rice, including senior
citizens and guests of the President's Office.
Volunteer opportunities would begin in the fall and be ongoing, though
ideally Ambassadors would have at least two weeks' notice before a particular duty. All new
Ambassadors would receive a day-long training session at Rice in the fall,
and be brought up to speed on new and recent changes at the university. To find out more about the Rice Ambassadors program, please contact Juan DeLeon.

RAVA
(Rice Alumni Volunteers for Admission)
Admission volunteers help spread
the word about Rice by talking to students across the U.S.
and around the world. These volunteers provide an invaluable
service, giving students an "inside" view of life
at Rice through their own experiences and ongoing knowledge
of the university. RAVA members act as alumni interviewers, occasionally
representing Rice at college fairs and generally helping to answer
questions from high school students in their communities.
For more information and to volunteer, please visit the RAVA
web page.
