What have you found to be most rewarding about serving on the ARA Board?
I have found meeting so may wonderful people to be most rewarding as an ARA Board member. Starting with the others on the board! Such a terrific bunch! I love my “committee” work! Working on the Task Forces to which I’ve been assigned, I really get to know individual board members as we do our work. Task Force work has also allowed me to meet Deans, students, and campus leaders whom I would not have met otherwise. And, I just love my Alumni Recognition Committee members— I’ve never laid eyes on some of them, but they are all so faithful and helpful in doing this very important work for ARA, carrying out one of our goals! (We could use a few more helpers—) I feel so lucky when I do ARA Task Force/committee work!!
What is your favorite “Only at Rice” memory or story?
An assignment which found me standing in the middle of the South Main Baptist parking lot on Main Street at 10:30 at night, holding my clenched fists up in front of my eyes while looking along the horizon in order to “measure” the progress of Venus entering the night sky. Ten degrees per fist — the sighting of this celestial body was a something like a once-in-seven-years event that our class was lucky to see! My being there was a once-in-a-lifetime event!
If you could give one piece of advice to Rice students, what would it be?
Respect your professors at Rice and take advantage of their expertise by doing your best possible work. We have outstanding faculty and what you learn here is part of the wealth of knowledge you will carry forward with you and use in making new discoveries for the rest your life.
