What does “Home Sweet Rice” mean to you? I was a curious youth from a small town, and Rice in 1961 offered me a transformative opportunity for learning, growth and broadening perspectives. My undergraduate years prepared me for life in ways that I hardly understood at the time, but in retrospect I see that Rice has been my intellectual homebase throughout my career. Rice gave me discipline, honed my skills, strengthened my ambition and exposed me to many cultural interests that have enriched my life. Having been a Rice student, a Rice professor and a Rice parent, the university has brought me joy and fulfillment on many levels, for many years.

What does “Home Sweet Rice” mean to you? Rice is a place where you can come, be yourself and be celebrated for it. It truly is a diverse and multi-generational community that welcomes everyone with open arms. The campus will always be a second home to me, and when I return, I feel a connection to almost every corner.Whether it was running the outer loop, going to football games (which I actually did as a student), working through problem sets with my classmates or hanging out with my fellow Lovetteers, I have memories imprinted all over the Rice campus. Being “Home Sweet Rice” means I get to reconnect with everyone I have met throughout the years both at Rice and after Rice and to relive the memories we shared together.
