I suppose I was destined to be a Rice nut, with my parents meeting as Rice students. As a Houston middle and high schooler, I fell in love with Rice through summer science courses, movies at the Media Center, and playing Rice Women’s Soccer on the inaugural club team. Once at Rice, my new friends (from Jones, Lovett, Powderpuff, Soccer, Architecture, and the Via Gabina Archeological Excavation) became my world, including future husband John Casbarian. Our future family (Claudia Casbarian, McMurtry 2012 and Julia Casbarian, Baker 2020) grew up at Lovett with Homecoming Co-Chair Andrew Lin while we were Masters, and our lives still revolve around Rice. My family tree was planted on campus, and Rice IS Home. Please join us in November!

If not for a chance encounter at a social event in Houston in 1964 by my elder brother Peter and Bud Moorhead, professor of architecture and registrar, who encouraged him to have me apply to Rice, my life’s trajectory would be unimaginably different. On a hot, steamy August in 1965 I set foot on the Rice campus and into a world that I had not known the likes of before nor since, a nurturing world of discovery, intellectual stimulation and creativity. For someone who had never even heard of Rice before, my life has centered around it ever since that fateful day in August, from my professional partnership with my classmates Danny Samuels ‘69 and Robert H. Timme '68 in Taft Architects, to my wife Natalye L. Appel '80, and now our two children, Claudia '12 and Julia '20, we are all imbued with the exhilarating Rice spirit.

Rice has always been a presence in my life. I grew up in Houston where it was easy to visit campus and attend summer school. Owl Weekend was my first taste of student life and I immediately knew that Rice was the place for me. As I made friends all over campus, many of them became as close as family to me. My sister, Jennifer Lin '04, and brother, Kevin Lin '10 & '12, followed in my footsteps, therefore Rice has literally become a family affair. Whenever I meet a fellow rice alum whether it's in Houston or halfway across the world, they feel like family. Rice feels like home and I hope that you'll join us in celebrating Homecoming & Reunion 2017.
