A Message from Association of Rice Alumni President David Leal '03 - Winter 2025

David Leal '03

Dear Rice alumni,

As winter settles in and the calendar turns toward a new year, I find myself reflecting on the incredible energy we shared this fall. From the excitement of O-Week to the camaraderie of Alumni Weekend, the Rice community continues to remind me of the enduring bonds that unite us as Owls.

Alumni Weekend 2025 was a highlight of the season. Whether you joined the alumni run, attended a faculty lecture or cheered on the Owls’ victory against UAB, your presence made the celebration truly special. It was inspiring to see alumni reconnect with classmates, explore new campus spaces like the O’Connor Building for Engineering and Science and the stunning Sarofim Hall art facility, and engage in meaningful conversations about Rice’s future at the town hall with President Reginald DesRoches.

I also want to highlight the recently announced Gateway Project, which will transform the west entrance to campus into a welcoming landmark that reflects Rice’s bold vision for the future. Made possible through the dedication of alumni, the project underscores the university’s commitment to accessibility, community and innovation.

That spirit of momentum extends to the field as well: Rice Athletics celebrated a series of remarkable achievements. The volleyball team captured the American Athletic Conference regular-season championship, the men’s tennis team won the AAC tournament title, and the women’s swimming and diving team claimed the AAC championship in Dallas. Plus, Rice will make its 15th bowl appearance in school history and its third in the last four years when the Owls face Texas State in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl. These victories highlight the determination and excellence of our student-athletes and reflect the pride we share in Rice’s accomplishments both on and off the field.

As we move into a new year, I encourage you to carry that spirit of connection forward. The Association of Rice Alumni thrives because of your involvement. Whether through mentoring students, attending regional gatherings or supporting Rice philanthropically, your engagement strengthens the university and enriches the lives of fellow alumni and students.

Looking ahead, spring will bring one of Rice’s most beloved traditions: Beer Bike 2026, happening April 11. This unique blend of spirited competition and campus camaraderie is a hallmark of the Rice experience, and I hope many of you will join us to celebrate alongside students and fellow alumni.

On behalf of the Association of Rice Alumni, I wish you a joyful and restful holiday season and a bright and inspired start to the new year. Thank you for all you do to keep the Rice spirit alive.

Go Owls,
David Leal ’03
