A Note from James Hurley, Associate Vice President of Alumni Relations

James Hurley

Dear Owls,

What an exciting and busy spring season we’ve had at Rice! I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with many of you on campus and in my travels, and I am constantly impressed by the enthusiasm, insight and commitment of the Rice alumni community. Thank you for partnering with the Office of Alumni Relations to enrich the alumni experience and to contribute to the excellence of the university.

The last quarter of Rice’s fiscal year is the perfect time to reflect on what we’ve accomplished and how we’ve grown as an alumni family:

  • During the 24-Hour Challenge on April 11, more than 6,400 donors, spanning students, alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends, contributed over $2 million for university priorities. Alumni and student donors met the challenge set by Walt Greenberg ’78, unlocking a $300,000 single donation for Rice. Thank you for showing up for your alma mater and giving back!

  • More than 2,500 total degrees were awarded to graduating Owls during Rice’s 111th commencement, May 3-4. Congratulations to the Class of 2024 and welcome to the Rice alumni family! No matter where your next adventure takes you, there are a variety of ways to stay connected with the university. Be the first to know about Rice alumni programming in your area by subscribing to receive regional alumni communications.

  • Together, with our university partners, the Development and Alumni Relations team engaged nearly 15,000 unique event attendees — a record-breaking year! Our dedicated volunteers and our staff in the Office of Alumni Relations are dedicated to providing memorable and engaging experiences that connect alumni from around the world. Our events calendar will keep you up-to-date on events ranging from large on-campus gatherings to small meet-ups with Owls in your area. In addition, mark your calendar for upcoming ContinuOWL Learning events. This program provides Rice alumni with exclusive access to webinars, online events and the Owls Online Book Forum.

Thanks again for all you do. Our team looks forward to seeing you across 2024 and connecting you back to Rice. With that in mind, please be sure to save the date for Alumni Weekend, Rice’s Homecoming and Reunion experience, on Nov. 1-2. More details will follow!

As always, you can reach us at alumni@rice.edu.

Go Owls,

James Hurley
