A Note from James Hurley, Associate Vice President of Alumni Relations - Spring 2025

James Hurley

Dear Owls,

Spring activities are in full motion, and there’s so much to look forward to at Rice and beyond! From beloved traditions to exciting reunions, we’re bringing our Owl community together for moments you won’t want to miss.

Rice’s strategic plan, Momentous, is on the move. I’ve enjoyed meeting alumni and parents from across the country as we share this ambitious vision. We’re bringing President DesRoches and Provost Dittmar to cities nationwide to discuss the exciting future of Rice. Find out if we’ll be in your city at alumni.rice.edu/events

Everyone’s favorite tradition – Beer Bike – returns on Saturday, April 5! Join us at the Alumni Tent for a brew-tastic celebration with fellow Owls. Plus, the Class of 2020 will kick off their 5th reunion on Friday, April 4, making the weekend even more special. Register today!

We’re also looking forward to honoring our 2025 Laureates Awards recipients at a special reception on May 8. This year, we recognize Frank Liu ’78 and Jan West ’73 with the Meritorious Service Award, Thomas Benford ’00 and Eugene Keilin ’64 with the Distinguished Alumni Award, and posthumously award the Gold Medal to Robert Maxfield ’63, ’64. Join us in celebrating their extraordinary achievements and meaningful contributions to their professions, communities and Rice.

For our recent alumni from the Classes of 2014-2024, we’ve launched a monthly run club. Meet up for a 3-mile run around campus and cap it off with a well-earned free drink at Valhalla – a great way to stay active and reconnect. Check out upcoming runs

And finally, drum roll, please...save the date for Alumni Weekend, Nov. 7-8! Come back to campus for a lively weekend filled with reconnection, celebration and spirited support for our Rice Owls. We’re revamping reunions to focus on engagement and giving, ensuring meaningful connections with Rice and your classmates. Stay tuned for more details!

As Rice continues to advocate for its mission nationally and globally, sharing your Rice story has never been more important. We encourage you to highlight how Rice has impacted your success and to promote the value of a Rice education in your networks. Let your voice be heard and help us showcase the enduring significance of Rice to the world.

Go Owls!
