What do you get when you mix socializing, learning and drinking? Brains in a Bar! Join young alums at True Anomaly Brewing Co. and hear from Reginald DesRoches, dean of the School of Engineering and newly announced provost. A nationally recognized expert on earthquake resilience, DesRoches earned several accolades as a professor at Georgia Tech and served as chair of the school’s civil and environmental engineering department. He was also recently elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering. After joining Rice as dean in 2017, he led a comprehensive strategic planning process, expanded engineering faculty by nearly 20% and strengthened collaborations with the Texas Medical Center, among other achievements. Beginning July 1, he will serve as the university’s provost, overseeing the university’s academic, research, scholarship and creative activities.
Event price includes appetizers and drinks.
No weekend at Rice is complete without a stop at Valhalla! Join fellow Owls for an afternoon picnic with lunch and lots of beer. DJ Chaney (Will Rice ’12) will also be there to help get the party started!
Grab a friend, fill up your water bottle and lace up your shoes – we’re headed to Memorial Park for a three-mile walk/run with Matthew Cheney ’10 ’14, a member of the Association of Rice Alumni Board and Baker Institute for Public Policy Roundtable Young Professionals! Cheney is the founder, owner and consultant at Houston-based Cheney Forensic Consulting, which provides consulting, training and expert testimony to forensic and legal communities. A young alum himself, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from the University of Texas at El Paso before earning master’s and doctorate degrees in chemistry from Rice. When he’s not working or volunteering, Cheney enjoys running, playing sand volleyball, riding his motorcycle and traveling the world.
Come together with the entire Owl community at Beer Bike! We have a few things on tap to give you the ultimate experience at the Alumni Tent: delicious food, refreshing mimosas (while supplies last), an expanded list of beer and beverage options and a prime spot to cheer on your team.
